Recently, we were delighted to welcome a delegation from the BioIndustry Association (BIA), to the Novartis global headquarters in Basel. As the UK prepares for Brexit, understanding how countries outside the EU, such as Switzerland, support their life sciences sector is more important than ever. This was an important visit for the future of the life sciences sector in the UK as the country begins to establish a new relationship with Europe and the rest of the world.
UK Life Sciences Sector The UK is a global leader in life sciences and the sector is a major contributor to the economy. At Novartis, we are committed to working with the government to ensure that the UK’s relationship with the EU delivers for patients, the NHS and the life sciences industry.
The BioIndustry Association The BIA delegation visited our Global headquarters to better understand how Switzerland works with Europe outside of the European Union, and also to forge new relationships. In addition to the BIA member companies, the delegation included representatives from the Office for Life Sciences (OLS) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
Novartis HQ During their visit, the delegation was taken on a tour of the Novartis campus and met with a variety of our experts in regulatory affairs, strategy and innovation and venture funding. Topics discussed included drug regulation, trade arrangements, R&D collaboration and regulation, and retaining an international workforce.
Looking to the future We are pleased that the BIA is taking early, proactive steps to understand how the UK can flourish as a centre for science and innovation outside of the EU and we look forward to continued collaboration.
“We were inspired by initiatives and policies that enable the country to remain at the forefront of biotech research and at the top of the list in terms of worldwide innovation rankings. It was also great to visit BIA member Novartis, who welcomed the delegation to their fascinating campus for the afternoon. A fitting end to a thought-provoking, productive and enjoyable trip.”
