Novartis International Biotechnology Leadership Camp (Biocamp) is a pioneering three-day seminar that brings the healthcare sector closer to talented students from top universities around the world.
This year Biocamp took place 28–31 August at Novartis International Headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. The number of participants is limited to a total of 60, 3 of which were selected from the UK. We received several hundred applications from highly qualified candidates from all over the world and over 100 applicants from the UK alone. A scientific jury considered the dossiers in a two-stage selection process and selected the following three students from the UK;
Abdulrahman Idoko Adam, MSc Biotechnology, University of Glasgow
Hiran Prag, PhD Biological Sciences, University of Cambridge
Theresa Maier, Doctorate Engineering/Paediatrics, University of Cambridge
The successful applicants got the chance to meet senior executives such as the Novartis Chief Executive Joe Jimenez and leading scientists, as well as have tours of our research labs, work on a real business case and gain business insights and first-hand experience from a biotech start-up CEO.
We congratulate all three UK participants on their remarkable contribution to Biocamp 2016, where over the course of three days they worked in teams on a business case to explore opportunities of using digital technologies in healthcare to benefit patients around the world. In particular we are pleased to announce Theresa Maier was selected by the Biocamp Jury as one of the three individual winners of BioCamp 2016 and will return to Novartis to carry out a personalised internship.
BioCamp gave me a new perspective of Novartis; because I grew up in Africa I was most surprised to learn of the incredible work being done to get medicines to people in developing countries through the access to healthcare programme.
The lectures and case study that we worked through across the three days provided valuable insights into the various considerations that go into decision making. The knowledge, experience and network that I developed will be invaluable throughout my career.
Charlotte Winter took part in Biocamp 2015 and is currently completing a graduate placement at Novartis Pharmaceuticals UK Ltd in the Medical Information Service Team as a Medical Information Services Support Advisor.
