Research & Development

Research and developmentNovartis is renowned for its innovative and successful research and development activities.

"We want to build the most competitive, most innovative Research Organization with the most promising pipeline in Industry to help people around the world".

At the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR), the goal is to discover new medicines, based on an understanding of molecular mechanisms of disease. Scientists are exploring the intersection of the chemical and biological universes, their focus on medicine combined with bioinformatics, genetics, and imaging tools as well as new chemical and screening technologies. The result: a drug discovery process that operates at a true scientific frontier.

The Novartis pharmaceutical pipeline is now one of the broadest and most exciting in the industry with 75 projects in clinical development and 50 in late stage trials.  Innovation within R&D is clearly illustrated by the fact that 90% of these projects are for new modes of action and for treating currently unmet clinical needs. In 2006 Novartis was awarded the annual Scrip Award for the best product pipeline in the industry for the second consecutive year.

Novartis invested almost $4billion in R&D in 2005, and scientists are engaged in research and development activities around the global.

Resources and scientific expertise are concentrated on strategically chosen disease areas including:
  • arthritis and bone metabolism
  • cardiovascular and metabolic diseases
  • dermatology/immunopathology
  • gastrointestinal diseases
  • infectious diseases
  • nervous system disorders
